Alan Shepard Becomes 1st American in Space

On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American and second human in space, performing a 15-minute suborbital flight aboard the Freedom 7 capsule. Launched from Cape Canaveral on a Mercury-Redstone rocket, he reached an altitude of 116 miles (187 km) before safely splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean
